California Extends Protections for Wildfire Victims
Governor Gavin Newsom issued a new executive order aimed at providing continued support for those affected by recent wildfires in Los Angeles County.
Key Components of the Executive Order
The executive order includes several important measures designed to protect the victims of the wildfires:
- Price Gouging Protections: Measures against price gouging in rental markets for housing, hotels, and motels will remain in effect until July 1, 2025. This includes a ban on evicting tenants to raise rental prices.
- Temporary Housing Classifications: The suspension of laws that assign tenant status to individuals in temporary housing after 30 days will continue, granting more time to find permanent accommodations.
- Support for the Homeless: Individuals affected by the fires who are experiencing homelessness will receive priority on waiting lists for state-funded housing initiatives.
- Community Rebuilding Efforts: The order also facilitates the revitalization of two commercial areas in Altadena, focusing on fostering small businesses and enhancing community spaces.
State Commitment to Recovery
In a statement regarding the executive order, Governor Newsom remarked, “As the Los Angeles community continues to recover and rebuild, the state remains steadfast in its commitment to providing targeted relief and assistance. Today, I am issuing an executive order to further ensure that survivors are protected from exploitation and can access the housing they need.”
