In a tragic revelation, medical examiners have confirmed that Betsy Arakawa, renowned concert pianist and spouse of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, succumbed to complications related to hantavirus. The couple was found deceased at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on February 26.

Details of the Investigation

Authorities reported that Arakawa, aged 65, was discovered in the bathroom of their residence. Nearby, pills associated with a separate thyroid condition were scattered on the counter. In contrast, 95-year-old Gene Hackman showed no evidence of contracting hantavirus; however, his death was attributed to serious heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s disease, as indicated by Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell.

Hantaviruses are a group of viruses that can result in severe health issues, particularly hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which affects the lungs. These viruses are primarily transmitted to humans through contact with rodent excretions, including urine, droppings, and saliva. Symptoms of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome typically manifest between one to eight weeks after exposure to infected rodents. Initial signs can include:
