In a heartbreaking incident that has left a Southern California family in distress, three sisters are grappling with the sudden detention of their parents by immigration officials. Gladys and Nelson Gonzalez, who moved to the U.S. from Colombia 35 years ago, were apprehended during a routine appointment with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on February 21.
Unexpected Turn of Events
Gabby Gonzalez, one of the couple’s daughters, expressed her devastation over the unforeseen situation. “You never think that it could happen to you and my parents were just ripped away from me like that,” she stated, fighting back tears. Gabby detailed the emotional toll, recalling that she was unaware of her parents’ appointment and missed the opportunity to say goodbye to her father on that fateful morning.
A Family Built Through Hardship
The Gonzalez family has worked hard to establish themselves in Newport Beach, California, where they have raised three daughters and welcomed a grandson. The couple initially arrived in the U.S. without documentation, yet they have lived as law-abiding residents and complied with immigration checks every year.
Detained and Transferred
After their detention at the ICE appointment, Gladys and Nelson were relocated to the Adelanto detention center before being sent to a facility in Arizona. “They were put into handcuffs by their wrists and ankles and treated as criminals,” Stephanie, another daughter, said. “All they said is they extended their stay, even though every year they’ve had permission to be here.”
