Nathan Bonsteel Celebrates Birthday Card Tradition
A cherished member of the Long Beach community, Nathan Bonsteel, is gearing up to celebrate his 24th birthday on March 22. His special day is marked by an influx of birthday cards from well-wishers across the globe, a heartwarming tradition that began four years ago with a simple request from his mother.
A Journey Sparked by a Mother’s Love
The initiative took shape during the COVID-19 lockdown when Nathan’s mother, Cindy Bonsteel, wanted to brighten her son’s days. Seeking to connect Nathan with others and bring him joy, she posted a heartfelt request on the Next Door app, inviting people to send birthday cards. The response exceeded her expectations.
A Global Outpouring of Support
From Australia to Canada, the kindness of strangers poured in, providing Nathan with a tangible connection to the world. “He has received some from the UK, Australia, Canada, the US,” Cindy shared with KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “It’s fun to open up a map and show him where we live and how far away the cards have come from.”
Record-Breaking Card Receipts
Nathan experienced a particularly remarkable year two years ago when he received over 3,000 birthday cards at his Long Beach home. “It was during COVID, and he was not in school. Since then, he’s out of school and he doesn’t have a day program; he’s just at home with me,” Cindy explained. The initiative initially started as a way to spread joy for Nathan, but it quickly turned into a source of happiness for many others.
Looking Forward to More Birthday Wishes
As Nathan prepares for his upcoming birthday, his family remains hopeful for an increase in card donations. Cindy mentioned that as of Sunday, Nathan had received 78 cards, with a week still remaining for more to arrive.
