Pope Francis Returns Home After Battle with Double Pneumonia

Vatican City witnessed a significant moment on Sunday as Pope Francis, at 88 years old, made his return after a five-week hospitalization due to life-threatening double pneumonia. As he resumed his duties, he is now prescribed a period of recovery and rest lasting approximately two months.

Arrival and Public Greeting

The pontiff made his entrance into Vatican City in a white Fiat 500L, equipped with nasal tubes for supplemental oxygen. His return was marked with relief among the faithful, following widespread concerns about his health and possible ramifications for his papacy.

In an unexpected gesture, the pope’s motorcade diverted to St. Mary Major basilica, a revered site where he often prays after international trips. Although he remained in the car, he presented a bouquet of flowers to Cardinal Stanislaus Ryłko for placement in front of the Salus populi Romani icon, a significant symbol in Catholicism, which the pope has chosen as his resting place.

Public Support During Hospitalization

The hospital stay began on February 14 when Francis was admitted for bronchitis that escalated into pneumonia. His health challenges included a complex blend of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections affecting his respiratory system. Notably, he faced two serious respiratory crises during his time in the hospital but remained alert and responsive throughout his treatment.

During a brief public appearance from the hospital balcony, Francis expressed gratitude towards well-wishers, acknowledging their support. “I see this woman with the yellow flowers. Brava!” he said, signaling his appreciation before being wheeled back inside.

Recovery and Future Plans

In light of his health issues, doctors have recommended that Francis take a two-month hiatus from public engagements to recuperate fully. He is set to receive round-the-clock medical assistance, including supplemental oxygen as needed, while he recuperates at the Domus Santa Marta, his residence in the Vatican. Close physician Dr. Luigi Carbone expressed optimism about Francis eventually returning to his usual activities.

The Vatican reflects relief following the longest hospitalization of his papacy and the second-longest in recent history. Dr. Rossella Russomando remarked on the power of collective prayer, stating, “It is the demonstration that all our prayers, all the rosary prayers from all over the world, brought this grace.”

Medical Care and Challenges

Francis’s health history includes chronic lung issues stemming from a surgery in his youth. The medical team at Gemelli hospital utilized various interventions, including blood transfusions, to manage his complex condition effectively. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, who led the medical team, emphasized the critical nature of Francis’s care, noting the risks involved with such severe cases of pneumonia.

Despite tribulations regarding his vocal abilities due to lung damage, it is expected that these complications will improve with time. “One morning we went to listen to his lungs and we asked him how he was doing. When he replied, ‘I’m still alive,’ we knew he was OK,” Alfieri shared during a press briefing.

Looking Ahead

As the Vatican prepares for upcoming events, there remains uncertainty surrounding specific appointments, including a scheduled audience with King Charles III and Easter services. However, there is hope that Pope Francis may participate in an important ecumenical anniversary planned for late May in Turkey.

While only St. John Paul II experienced a longer hospitalization, the compassionate outpouring from the public continues to highlight the deep bond between the pope and the faithful.
