Former Southern California Teacher Sentenced for Possessing Child Pornography

A former elementary school teacher from Southern California has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for the possession of explicit child sex abuse material. Steven Pilar, aged 47, was previously teaching fifth grade at the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in the San Gabriel Valley.

Details of the Case

Pilar’s illegal activities took place between February and April of 2020, while he was residing in Victorville. During this time, he utilized BitTorrent, a digital file-sharing platform, to access and download videos and images depicting child pornography. In total, prosecutors indicated that he received and downloaded approximately 444 videos and images featuring minors in sexually explicit situations.

Authorities reported that Pilar knowingly possessed these materials for a duration before ultimately deleting them. His arrest occurred in April 2020 on state charges, which were later dismissed to allow for a federal investigation into his case.

Legal Proceedings

In August 2024, federal charges were filed against Pilar, including two counts of receiving child pornography and two counts of possessing child pornography. By December 2024, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography.

Impact on the Victims

In a sentencing memorandum, the prosecutors emphasized the profound harm caused to the victims, noting that Pilar’s actions constituted a continuation of the cycle of victimization. They highlighted the severity of his offense due to his prior role as an educator of young children. “His actions caused direct and significant harm to the victims in this case, and his offense is aggravated by the fact that he was teaching young children at the time,” they remarked.

Statement from Authorities

U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada underscored the commitment to safeguarding children from sexual predators, stating, “Protecting children from sexual predators is critical, and my office will be unrelenting in our efforts to punish those who commit these crimes.” This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.
