Murder Investigation Updates at Ashton Sherman Village Apartments
Following the unresolved murder of 53-year-old Menash “Manny” Hidra last month, residents of the Ashton Sherman Village Apartments in Valley Village are expressing concern over security in their community, as reports of transients wandering the hallways continue to surface.
The Incident
On April 26, LAPD discovered Hidra’s body in his fifth-floor apartment at the complex located in the 126000 block of Riverside Drive. Just three days prior, a nearby resident reported alarming sounds around 3 a.m. on April 23, including screams and cries for help.
“I just woke up to some loud noises, something crashing,” the resident recounted to KTLA. “There was screaming, and I called our security and, also, right after that, I called the police.” The resident requested anonymity out of fear.
Surveillance Footage and Investigation
Doorbell camera footage later released by the LAPD displayed a man suspected of involvement in the murder, seen roaming the halls on that same night, attempting to gain access to apartments. Information has been scarce from police; however, they confirmed that the suspect forcibly entered Hidra’s apartment and a violent altercation ensued.
Additional footage from May 6 also showed an unidentified man with a bicycle, allegedly a transient, loitering in the complex. This raised alarms among residents, as many believe safety measures must be reinforced.
Residents’ Concerns
Residents are increasingly worried about their safety. Reports indicate that management has not adequately addressed long-standing security issues, including broken exterior doors and unauthorized access to the building’s roof. While they have introduced “courtesy patrols” since the murder, residents feel this is insufficient.
“We are living in a real-life ‘Chutes and Ladders’ scenario with scaffolding around the building, which allows anyone easy access,” one anonymous resident lamented.
Call for Public Assistance
As the investigation continues, the LAPD is seeking any information regarding the identified suspect. Individuals with leads are encouraged to contact the LAPD’s Valley Bureau at 818-374-9559. Alternatively, tips can be submitted anonymously through the Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-222-8477 or via their website at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
The management of Ashton Sherman Village Apartments has yet to provide a statement regarding these concerns and incidents, despite repeated inquiries from news outlets.
As the community grapples with these recent events, residents hope for swift resolution to improve security and restore a sense of safety within their homes.
