Four Arrested in Connection with Teen’s Suicide from Sextortion Scam
Federal authorities have taken decisive action by arresting four individuals from Ivory Coast linked to the tragic suicide of a high school student in San Jose, California. This arrest comes nearly three years after Ryan Last, a 17-year-old, fell victim to a detestable sextortion scheme.
Background of the Case
In February 2022, Ryan Last engaged in an online conversation with someone he believed to be a woman on Facebook. This interaction led to an exchange of explicit photos. Shortly thereafter, he was coercively demanded to pay $5,000 to prevent the dissemination of his own nude photo to friends and family. Ultimately, the extortionists reduced their ransom to $150 after Ryan expressed his financial inability to pay the full amount.
Ryan’s mother, Pauline Stuart, described her son as inherently trusting and revealed that even after he paid the reduced amount, the threats did not cease. The emotional burden was immense, and in his suicide note, Ryan expressed deep remorse and fear regarding the impact of his predicament on his family.
The Arrests and Charges
In April 2023, the key suspect, Alfred Kassi, was arrested in Ivory Coast. Reports indicate that authorities discovered the original extortion messages on his phone, substantiating the ongoing investigation. Three additional suspects face charges related to money laundering, as they have been linked to extensive sextortion activities that targeted thousands across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Another member of this illicit group, Jonathan Kassi, was apprehended in Los Angeles in December 2022. He has since been convicted of state extortion charges and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Legal Proceedings and Future Implications
Due to regulations in Ivory Coast, extradition of citizens to the U.S. is not an option. Consequently, the four men arrested will encounter cybercrime-related charges in their home country as authorities continue to pursue justice on behalf of victims like Ryan Last.
