KTLA 5 is excited to announce the addition of Melvin Robert to its esteemed team of anchors. As a native Angeleno from Inglewood, Melvin brings a rich personal history and a wealth of experience to his new role on the station’s entertainment team.

Roots in Inglewood

Born and raised in Inglewood, Melvin’s family moved there in the 1960s, becoming one of the first Black families in their neighborhood. Their experience shaped his love for the area, which includes fond memories of attending concerts at the Forum and games with the Los Angeles Lakers. Even now, he regularly enjoys walks to SoFi Stadium with his father, who is a devoted Rams fan.

Family Legacy in Education

Melvin’s family has a long-standing tradition in education. With a mother who taught for 40 years and a grandmother who was also an educator, he followed this legacy after earning his degree. During his nearly 12-year career in teaching, he formed a meaningful friendship with a colleague, Trinity, who played a pivotal role in encouraging him to pursue his dreams in television.

A Journey to Entertainment

Throughout his youth, Melvin exhibited a passion for the performing arts, but it was during his time at Loyola High School that he truly discovered his love for theater. While he initially embarked on a career in education, he soon realized his aspirations extended beyond the classroom.

Together with a simple setup of an iPad and a microphone, Melvin began enhancing his storytelling skills and shared his journey through digital platforms. His persistence paid off, leading to an on-air position with a digital news outlet, and subsequently, joining the KTLA 5 Morning News team as a culture and lifestyle contributor. He later took on key roles at Spectrum News 1 and Fox’s KTTV, further affirming his commitment to his craft.

Returning to KTLA 5

In 2025, Melvin returned to KTLA 5, the station he admired as a child. He described his return as an “extraordinary gift” and a “privilege” to continue the station’s legacy, particularly honoring the work of veteran anchor Sam Rubin, who left an indelible mark on entertainment news.

Melvin’s Aspirations

Reflecting on his career, Melvin shared, “There were so many people who told me that I was too old or that it was too late, and questioned why at the age of 30, I would want to go down this path. And I just kept going.” He emphasizes the importance of resilience and continues to inspire others by sharing his journey and the lessons he learned along the way.
