Devastating Earthquake Affects Myanmar and Thailand: Ceasefire for Relief Efforts

BANGKOK (AP) — A catastrophic earthquake struck the region, causing substantial devastation in Myanmar and neighboring Thailand. In response to the disaster, the shadow National Unity Government of Myanmar declared a temporary ceasefire to facilitate much-needed relief efforts.

Casualty Updates and Damage Reports

As of Saturday, the death toll in Myanmar reached 1,644, a dramatic increase from the prior estimate of 1,002. This update reflects the ongoing challenges in confirming accurate casualty figures due to the extensive destruction from the 7.7 magnitude quake that occurred on Friday. The number of reported injuries now stands at 3,408, with an additional 139 individuals still unaccounted for.

Impact Sees Increased Fatalities in Thailand

In Thailand, the aftermath of the quake resulted in 10 confirmed deaths. The earthquake shook the greater Bangkok area, affecting a population of approximately 17 million. Most casualties occurred at the site of a collapsed high-rise construction project near Chatuchak Market, with 78 workers still missing.

Naruemol Thonglek, a 45-year-old local, spoke of her despair while awaiting news about her partner and five friends trapped beneath the rubble. “I was praying that they had survived, but when I got here and saw the ruin — where could they be?” she lamented.

Relief Operations in Myanmar Hindered

In Myanmar, rescue efforts are particularly concentrated in the cities of Mandalay and Naypyitaw. Despite international assistance, operations are challenged by extensive damage to infrastructure, including a severely impacted Naypyitaw International Airport, where the air traffic control tower was reportedly toppled.

Additionally, the ongoing civil conflict complicates relief efforts. Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been entrenched in a civil war, leading to significant resistance against the ruling government. Many areas remain perilous for aid organizations, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Ceasefire Announced for Humanitarian Aid

The National Unity Government announced a unilateral partial ceasefire, effective Sunday, in regions affected by the quake. This ceasefire aims to facilitate collaboration with the United Nations and other organizations to ensure effective aid distribution and establish temporary medical facilities.

The group affirmed that they reserve the right to defend themselves if attacked, emphasizing their commitment to humanitarian assistance amidst ongoing conflict.

Extent of the Damage and Humanitarian Needs

The earthquake, centered near Mandalay, has resulted in widespread infrastructure collapse, including significant damages to residential buildings, roads, and bridges. In Naypyitaw, agencies are working to restore critical services, although power and communication remain largely offline.

The United Nations has allocated $5 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund to support immediate relief efforts, including essential supplies, shelter, and medical aid. A convoy carrying critical resources from China is set to arrive soon, addressing the urgent needs of the affected populations.

International Assistance and Commitment

Countries, including China and Russia, have responded swiftly with humanitarian aid, sending rescue teams and supplies. China announced the dispatch of over 135 rescue experts, while Russia contributed 120 rescuers and medical personnel.

Other nations, such as India and South Korea, have also pledged support, further highlighting the international community’s commitment to aiding those affected by this disaster. The U.S. government has expressed readiness to assist in recovery efforts.

The Geological Context of the Earthquake

Although earthquakes are uncommon in Bangkok, Myanmar is situated on the seismically active Sagaing Fault, making such events a potential risk. Brian Baptie from the British Geological Survey noted the intense shaking in populated areas, where many buildings are vulnerable due to their construction methods.

“A major earthquake in a densely populated area with vulnerable infrastructure can lead to disastrous consequences,” he stated.

With rescue operations ongoing and relief efforts being mobilized, the situation in both Myanmar and Thailand remains critical as communities seek to recover from the devastation.
