Rome’s Masses Unite in Prayer for Next Pope
On Sunday, the faithful gathered across various venues in Rome—from the concrete structures of public housing projects to the historical heart of the city—to pray for guidance as the Church prepares for the upcoming papal conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
A Hope for the Marginalized
During services at both San Paolo della Croce and Santa Maria in Trastevere, many attendees expressed a shared desire for a new pontiff who would prioritize outreach to those living on the fringes of society. The emphasis was on fostering peace in a world they perceive as increasingly dangerous.
Michele Cufaro, a glass and metalworker, voiced his hopes, stating that he wishes for a pope focused on poverty alleviation and the eradication of hatred and conflict. He emphasized the need for compassionate guidance to help lost youth navigate today’s challenges.
Desire for Connection and Support
Ida Di Giovannantonio, a parishioner who met Pope Francis during his visit in 2018, expressed her longing for a pontiff who would provide comfort through personal visits. Reflecting on her own struggles upon moving to the projects, she described the church as a sanctuary that offers welcome and support.
On Sundays, volunteers at San Paolo collect food donations, making tangible the community’s commitment to serving the needy.
Continuing the Legacy of Compassion
In contrast to Corviale, Lisa Remondino prayed for a successor who would uphold the legacy of Pope Francis, especially regarding support for migrants. Remondino, a kindergarten teacher involved with the Sant’Egidio charity, underscored the importance of a voice advocating for peace amidst ongoing global conflicts.
Views from Diverse Congregations
Marta Finati, while visiting the bustling Santa Maria, articulated the need for the Church to maintain doctrinal integrity while remaining open to broader societal issues. She believes that the next pope should take a moral stance on political leadership for peace.
Mathieu Dansoko, who migrated from Mali, highlighted that the next pope should prioritize bringing the marginalized into the congregation’s heart, reinforcing the notion of community as familial.
Reflections on Pope Francis’s Impact
Rev. Roberto Cassano, the parish priest in Corviale, lamented the loss of Pope Francis, identifying it as a significant blow to the community that had briefly felt visible during his visit. He called for a return to a stronger sense of faith and presence of God to mitigate societal issues like selfishness and egoism.
During Sunday Mass, Cardinal Oswald Gracias reminded the community of the distinct contributions of the last three popes and invited prayers for the selection of a new leader attuned to contemporary needs.
