Local Artist Honors Wildfire Victims with Sketches of Lost Homes
In the wake of the devastating January wildfires in the Palisades and Eaton areas, a passionate initiative has emerged from the community. Rachel Siegel, a local artist based in West Los Angeles, is offering her artistic skills to create free sketches of homes lost to the flames. This project not only serves as a form of remembrance but also as a heartfelt tribute to the families affected by this tragedy.
About the Initiative
Siegel, who transitioned from architecture to art five years ago, has found purpose in her work amidst the devastation. “When I need to redirect myself or the fear or helplessness, I go to art,” she explained. Her initiative, called the “Lost Homes” series, focuses on memorializing the residences that were destroyed, helping owners retain a piece of their cherished memories.
Personal Stories of Loss
One poignant example is Kevin Yoo, who lost his father-in-law’s home during the Eaton Fire. This residence held special significance as it was the venue for his wedding in 2023. After discovering Siegel’s artwork through a friend’s Instagram post, Yoo decided to surprise his family with a sketch of the home, which he described as more than just a photo—it is an original piece crafted with care. “It’s cool to have something that’s not just a photo but an original artwork that someone put hours into,” Yoo said.
A Growing Impact
To date, Rachel Siegel has illustrated 57 homes, meeting an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. “It’s really been meaningful and it’s been emotional,” she shared, remarking on the appreciation she has received from families benefiting from her sketches. Siegel confirmed her commitment to continue providing this service to fire victims at no cost.
