Yolanda Saldívar Denies Sole Responsibility for Selena’s Death
Yolanda Saldívar, the individual convicted of murdering the beloved Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in 1995, has expressed controversial views regarding her conviction and the events leading to Selena’s death. As Saldívar, now 64, seeks parole, she attributes part of the tragedy to the late singer’s confrontational behavior.
Parole Filing and Saldívar’s Claims
Saldívar officially filed for parole in January, following her conviction for the shooting incident that took place in a Texas hotel room. According to family members speaking to the New York Post, Saldívar acknowledges her actions were wrong and that she takes responsibility for her role in the crime. Nonetheless, she suggests that her reaction was influenced by Selena’s perceived aggression during their confrontation.
Family Insights on the Incident
One family member relayed Saldívar’s perspective, stating, “She says that (Selena) came at her really aggressively. She was so thrown off with how forceful Selena was being; everything happened so fast. If Selena had confronted her differently, this never would have happened.” This claim presents a contentious view on the dynamics of the situation leading up to the fatal encounter.
Response from Authorities
Former Corpus Christi Police Commander John Houston, who was among the first officers to respond to the shooting, has criticized Saldívar’s statements. Houston referred to her claims as “nonsense” and a “continuation of the lies” she has perpetuated since the incident. He questioned her motives for making such statements shortly before her parole hearing, stating, “What kind of negative attention do you want to bring to yourself two weeks before your hearing?”
