LOS ANGELES — Amazon Prime Video premiered its latest original series, Countdown, on June 25, 2025. The crime drama features Jensen Ackles as LAPD Detective Mark Meachum, who becomes part of a covert task force investigating a Homeland Security officer’s murder that spirals into a broader conspiracy threatening millions.
Created by Derek Haas, known for Chicago Fire and FBI: International, Countdown marks his first major streaming project. The series combines procedural elements with serialized storytelling, aiming to deliver a high-stakes narrative. The ensemble cast includes Eric Dane as task force leader Nathan Blythe, Jessica Camacho as DEA agent Amber Oliveras, Violett Beane, Uli Latukefu, and Elliot Knight.
The premiere’s opening sequence features a surprise cameo by Milo Ventimiglia, whose character’s death sets the tone for the series. Haas and Ackles intentionally kept this cameo under wraps to enhance the shock value.
The first three episodes are currently available on Prime Video, with new episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays. The 13-episode season is set to conclude on September 3, 2025.
Early reviews have been mixed. Collider praised the cast’s performances and the show’s engaging nature, while The Daily Beast criticized it as formulaic and uninspired. Despite this, the series has garnered attention for its action sequences and the chemistry between Ackles and Dane.
Eric Dane’s involvement is particularly notable, as he continues to work amid his ALS diagnosis announced in April. Ackles commended Dane’s resilience and leadership on set, highlighting the strong camaraderie among the cast.
