Pope Francis’ State Funeral: A Reflection of His Humble Legacy
Massive Public Participation
Over 250,000 individuals paid their last respects to Pope Francis during a three-day public viewing that concluded with his coffin’s sealing on Friday. This ceremony preceded his state funeral held in St. Peter’s Square and his burial in a basilica outside Vatican walls.
Global Leaders in Attendance
A significant presence of world leaders gathered in Rome for the funeral, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei. Notably, 164 delegations were confirmed, featuring 54 heads of state and 12 reigning monarchs. French President Emmanuel Macron took the opportunity to pay his respects ahead of the funeral.
The Mourning Process
In an unexpected turn, tens of thousands of mourners stood in line for hours to honor Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 due to a stroke. The Vatican extended opening hours due to the high turnout.
Among the mourners was Sister Angele Bilegue, who visited the late pope’s body multiple times. Describing Francis as a friend, she expressed her sorrow: “I cried,” she said, recalling moments spent praying at his coffin.
Coffin Sealing Ceremony
The solemn moment of sealing Pope Francis’ coffin marked the end of public viewing. He lay adorned in red robes with a pointed miter, clasping a rosary. His iconic black shoes, showing wear and tear, were included to symbolize his humble lifestyle.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell presided over this ceremonial closing, during which a cloth was placed over the pope’s face. A document, known as a rogito, summarizing his contributions and life experiences, was also placed in the coffin.
Memories and Reflections
As mourners reflected on their connection to the pope, individuals like Aurelia Ballarini and Francesca Codato revealed personal sentiments. Ballarini spoke about her sense of loss: “For me he flew away. One day, we will see each other again.” Codato, grappling with feelings of guilt for not embracing Francis earlier, expressed her remorse, admitting, “I feel guilty, because through videos…I have understood he was a man of enormous humanity.”
The Conclave Ahead
The cardinals, tasked with electing a new pope, will not commence their conclave until at least May 5, following a period of public mourning. Currently, 149 cardinals convene to discuss church matters, but decisions will not be reached until the conclusion of the funeral.
Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo remembered Francis as a “free man” who enhanced the church’s connection with everyday individuals while maintaining its sanctity.
Papal Burial Arrangements
In a nod to his commitment to serving the marginalized, a group of needy individuals will have the privilege of paying homage at the burial site in St. Mary Major Basilica. This location was chosen to be near the revered Madonna icon, a significant figure in Francis’ spiritual life.
A private burial ceremony will take place, with a simple Latin inscription on the tombstone reading “Franciscus,” as per his wishes.
Funeral Security Measures
With an expected turnout of around 200,000 mourners in St. Peter’s Square, Italy has mobilized over 2,500 police officers and 1,500 soldiers for security during the funeral. Additional measures include an armed naval vessel and standby fighter jets.
