Dodgers Rally Late to Defeat Mets 6–5, Split Season Series

by LA Highlights Team

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2025 — The Los Angeles Dodgers mounted a thrilling late-inning comeback to edge the New York Mets 6–5 on Thursday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, salvaging a split in their four-game series and concluding their season series tied at three games apiece.

Trailing 5–3 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers capitalized on a combination of timely hitting and a critical defensive miscue by the Mets. Mookie Betts led off the inning with a walk against reliever Reed Garrett, who entered the game with a sterling 0.68 ERA. Will Smith followed with an RBI double, narrowing the deficit to one run. After Teoscar Hernández advanced Smith to third with a flyout, Andy Pages hit a grounder to third baseman Brett Baty. Baty hesitated before making an errant throw home, allowing Smith to score the tying run. Michael Conforto then delivered a go-ahead RBI single to left field, giving the Dodgers their first lead of the game.

“I was pump-faking and I thought he was going to come back, and he ended up going the other way,” Baty said postgame. “It’s just a very dumb mistake and it can’t happen in that situation.”

The Mets had built an early 4–0 lead, thanks to solo home runs by Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Starling Marte. Alonso’s homer was his third in two games, bringing his season total to 15. Marte added a season-high three hits, including a double in the eighth that set up Alonso’s RBI single, extending the Mets’ lead to 5–3.

Dodgers starter Landon Knack struggled with command, issuing a career-high five walks and allowing four runs over 3⅓ innings. The bullpen, however, held the Mets in check, with Alex Vesia (2–0) recording the final out of the eighth to earn the win, and Tanner Scott securing his 11th save with a scoreless ninth.

Despite the loss, Mets starter David Peterson delivered a solid performance, allowing three runs over seven innings. The Mets were without star shortstop Francisco Lindor, who fractured a toe in the previous game.

The Dodgers’ victory underscores their resilience and ability to capitalize on opponents’ errors. With the win, Los Angeles improved to 38–25, while New York fell to 39–24.

Both teams will look to build momentum as they continue their respective seasons, with the Dodgers hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and the Mets traveling to face the Colorado Rockies in their upcoming series.
