From Underdog to Leader: Quentin Lake’s NFL Journey

Quentin Lake, a sixth-round pick of the NFL Draft in 2022, has made an impressive transformation into a key player for the Los Angeles Rams. Three years since his draft day, he has emerged as a team captain and excelled as the Rams’ second-leading tackler in the 2024 season.

Following in Legendary Footsteps

Lake’s ascension is not entirely unexpected, given the NFL lineage he hails from. His father, Carnell Lake, is a notable figure, a five-time All-Pro safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers and a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team from the 1990s. Rather than imposing the sport on his son, Carnell consciously chose to let Quentin forge his own path.

“When he was little, he was always asking me to coach him, and I wouldn’t,” Carnell shared with KTLA. “I wanted it to be his thing. I didn’t want him to have that pressure.”

A Shift to Defense

Despite his father’s hands-off approach, Quentin found his way to football, initially playing running back. A pivotal moment occurred when his coach suggested he try his luck as a defensive back, a role that suited him well.

High School and College Success

Quentin continued to shine in this position, gaining recognition during his time at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana before moving on to UCLA, where he mirrored his father’s collegiate path. Although Carnell was busy with his coaching career at the time, he prioritized attending Quentin’s games.

“To be able to spend that quality time with my son is really important to me,” Carnell remarked. “And if I can give him some nuggets that help him in his career, that’s great.”

Learning from Experience

Lake’s career has not been without its learning experiences. He recalls a moment in college when he disregarded a piece of advice from Carnell, which resulted in a touchdown against him. This led him to acknowledge, “Dad, you were right,” after which their collaboration on film study deepened.

“He had an ‘I told you so moment,’” Quentin said about reflecting on that experience. “After that, we really started diving into the film. He makes sure I’m putting myself in the best possible position to succeed.”

Beyond the Field: Advocacy and Family Bonds

The bond between the Lakes extends beyond football. Recently, they collaborated on a public service announcement for Edwards Lifesciences to promote awareness about heart valve disease. The Rams, in partnership with Edwards, are offering free heart valve screenings to the public, a cause close to the Lake family.

Quentin expressed satisfaction in encouraging Carnell to participate in screenings, stating he feels he’s coaching his father in this endeavor. Nevertheless, the competitiveness in their relationship remains light-hearted.

When asked who is the better player, their responses varied. While Quentin attributed speed to his father, Carnell stated that his son excels in catching and tackling. Nonetheless, Quentin admitted that Carnell’s hitting power gives him an edge. “Football is our love language,” Quentin concludes, emphasizing their shared passion for the sport.

Conclusion

Quentin Lake’s inspiring journey from a late-round draft pick to an NFL team captain serves as a testament to talent, hard work, and the influential role a father can play. For more details about the free screenings for heart valve disease, check this source.
