Golden State Valkyries Outlast Los Angeles Sparks in Overtime Thriller

LOS ANGELES — In a gripping WNBA Commissioner’s Cup matchup on June 9, 2025, the Golden State Valkyries secured an 89–81 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena. The win marks the Valkyries’ second consecutive triumph, improving their season record to 4–5, while the Sparks fall to 3–7.

The game was a showcase of resilience and clutch performances. Golden State’s Janelle Salaün led all scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Kayla Thornton contributed a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Temi Fágbénlé added 14 points, 13 rebounds, and a notable defensive presence with four steals and four blocks. Carla Leite’s 15 points included a pivotal layup with 25.1 seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game at 78–78 and forcing overtime.

In the extra period, the Valkyries dominated, outscoring the Sparks 11–2 over the final 3:47. Veronica Burton’s layup gave Golden State an 80–79 lead, and Thornton’s subsequent basket extended the advantage. Salaün’s putback and Thornton’s three-pointer with 38.6 seconds left sealed the victory.

The Sparks were led by Kelsey Plum, who tallied 24 points, including four three-pointers, and seven assists. Dearica Hamby added 20 points and nine rebounds. Despite their efforts, Los Angeles struggled in overtime, missing eight of nine field goal attempts.

The Valkyries’ dominance on the boards was evident, outrebounding the Sparks 49–34, including a 17–6 edge in offensive rebounds. This advantage translated into 16 second-chance points for Golden State.

This victory continues the Valkyries’ impressive inaugural season, following a commanding 95–68 win over the Las Vegas Aces on June 7. The team’s recent performances highlight their growing cohesion and competitiveness in the league.

The Sparks, under first-year head coach Lynne Roberts, face challenges as they aim to improve their standings. Their next opportunity comes against the Las Vegas Aces on June 11.
