Natalia Bryant Dedicates New Basketball Court in Honor of Kobe and Gianna

by LA Highlights Team

On May 21, 2025, Natalia Bryant, daughter of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant, unveiled a newly refurbished basketball court at Atlantic Avenue Park in East Los Angeles. The court is dedicated to her father and younger sister, Gianna Bryant, both of whom tragically passed away in a helicopter crash in January 2020. This initiative, a collaboration between the Bryant family, sports drink company BodyArmor, and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation, aims to honor the legacies of Kobe and Gianna while providing a space for young athletes to develop their skills and embrace the “Mamba Mentality.”

The court features the iconic purple and gold colors of the Los Angeles Lakers, with “Kobe & Gianna Bryant” emblazoned at center court. Surrounding the names are butterfly motifs, symbolizing transformation and remembrance—elements that have become synonymous with tributes to the Bryants. During the dedication ceremony, Natalia expressed her hope that the court would serve as a place of inspiration and growth for the community’s youth.

This dedication marks the second basketball court opened in honor of Kobe and Gianna. In June 2023, Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, inaugurated a similar court at Wilson Park in Compton, California. That event featured murals of the father-daughter duo and included appearances by WNBA legend Lisa Leslie and NBA star Trae Young. The Compton court was part of a broader initiative by the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, in partnership with BodyArmor, to refurbish basketball courts across the country, aiming to create safe and inspiring spaces for young athletes.

BodyArmor’s involvement in these projects underscores the ongoing partnerships aimed at community development and youth engagement. Kobe Bryant invested $6 million in BodyArmor in 2013, acquiring a 10% stake in the company. This investment proved fruitful, as the company was later sold to Coca-Cola for $5.6 billion, with Bryant’s estate reportedly earning $400 million from the deal. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation’s involvement ensures that these facilities are accessible and maintained for public use, aligning with the Bryants’ vision of inclusivity and empowerment through sport.

The unveiling of the court comes shortly after Natalia’s graduation from the University of Southern California, where she paid tribute to her father during the commencement ceremony. The dedication event was attended by community members, local officials, and representatives from the partnering organizations, all gathered to celebrate the enduring impact of Kobe and Gianna Bryant on the city of Los Angeles and the world of basketball.

As the community embraces this new space, the court stands not only as a memorial to two beloved figures but also as a beacon of hope and opportunity for aspiring athletes. Through initiatives like these, the Bryant family’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift future generations.
