New Wildfires Emerge in Los Angeles County Amid Ongoing Fire Season

by LA Highlights Contributor

Los Angeles County is facing a renewed wildfire threat after three separate blazes ignited on June 28, raising alarms amid an already active and challenging fire season across California. The fires, all reported on private land, have prompted immediate responses from local and state firefighting agencies working to prevent further spread and protect nearby communities.

The first wildfire was reported at 12:33 p.m., followed by the Olive Fire at 2:58 p.m., and a third blaze at 7:44 p.m. on the same day. Each incident remains under investigation, with no official word yet on the containment levels or potential causes. As of the latest updates, authorities have not issued any evacuation orders, though they continue to monitor conditions closely.

Local officials are urging residents to stay vigilant. “We are in the peak of fire season, and the risks are high,” said a spokesperson from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “Crews are working diligently to control these fires, but we ask that residents be prepared in case conditions change rapidly.”

The wildfires come as Southern California contends with a dangerous mix of environmental conditions contributing to fire hazards. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) reports that precipitation across the state since October is only about 70% of the seasonal average. Combined with persistently above-average temperatures throughout May and June, the region is experiencing extremely dry vegetation and low fuel moisture — key ingredients for wildfire ignition and spread.

The Olive Fire, in particular, drew attention due to its visibility and proximity to residential areas. Crews from multiple jurisdictions responded to the scene, deploying ground and aerial resources to halt its progression. Despite initial challenges, firefighting efforts have so far prevented the blaze from threatening structures.

These developments are unfolding against a backdrop of increasing wildfire frequency and intensity across California. In recent years, longer fire seasons, driven by climate-related factors, have strained emergency response systems and devastated communities. According to CAL FIRE, the 2025 season has already seen hundreds of wildfires across the state, with conditions unlikely to improve significantly until the arrival of consistent rainfall.

“Fire behavior is changing, and our approach must change with it,” CAL FIRE Chief Joe Tyler said in a recent briefing. “We’re urging all Californians to stay informed and take personal responsibility for preparedness. The actions we take now can save lives and property.”

Authorities are also reminding landowners and residents in high-risk areas to clear defensible space around homes, maintain emergency kits, and have evacuation plans in place. Local governments have issued alerts through emergency communication systems, and residents are encouraged to sign up for notifications through the county’s Ready LA platform.

While the cause of the June 28 fires is still undetermined, investigators will assess factors such as electrical equipment, human activity, and natural ignition sources. In previous years, a significant number of California wildfires have been linked to utility infrastructure and unintentional human actions such as discarded cigarettes or equipment malfunctions.

As of now, no injuries or structural damages have been reported. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes with the hope of achieving containment soon, though forecasts suggest continued hot and dry conditions through the coming week.
