Box Office Report: Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘Sinners’ Lead the Charts Again
The North American box office showcased strong performances this weekend, with Marvel’s Thunderbolts and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continuing their reign from previous weeks. Despite a slew of new competitors in various genres, neither film faced significant challenges in maintaining their standings.
Weekend Highlights
Thunderbolts clinched the top spot once again, grossing an estimated $33.1 million across U.S. and Canadian theaters. This figure represents a 55% decrease from its debut weekend, yet the film’s global earnings reached $272.2 million after accounting for an additional $34 million overseas. Impressively, Thunderbolts quickly became the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, both domestically and internationally.
In comparison, the prior Marvel installment, Captain America: Brave New World, experienced a steeper 68% drop in its second weekend. Positive word-of-mouth appears to have boosted Thunderbolts, reinforcing its appeal among viewers. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked, “The holding power of this film harkens back to the heyday of Marvel.”
The Rise of ‘Sinners’
Sinners maintained strong momentum as well, surpassing the $200 million milestone in North American ticket sales. It accumulated $21.1 million domestically during the weekend and an international intake of $6.6 million, resulting in a global total of $283.3 million. Following public demand, the film is scheduled for re-release in 70mm IMAX next week.
Other Films in the Top Rankings
Warner Bros.’ animated A Minecraft Movie secured third place with a domestic earnings tally of $8 million, bringing its total haul to $409 million. Meanwhile, The Accountant 2 followed closely behind, collecting $6.1 million in fourth place.
Several new releases attempted to break into the box office rankings but fell short of expectations. Clown in a Cornfield debuted as the best of the newcomers, with $3.7 million. Other new titles such as Shadow Force, featuring Kerry Washington and Omar Sy, and Fight or Flight, starring Josh Hartnett, each brought in approximately $2 million.
Market Overview
As the box office gradually stabilizes, year-to-date earnings are up 16% compared to last year, although they still lag 32% behind 2019 figures. Upcoming releases, including Final Destination: Bloodlines, are poised to drive further engagement in the market, particularly as major titles like Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning prepare to debut over the holiday weekend.
