by LA Highlights Contributor

The Mubadala Citi DC Open, also known as the Washington Open, began on Monday, July 21, at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C. The ATP/WTA 500-level event runs through Sunday, July 27, featuring a star-studded field including top-ranked players like Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula, Frances Tiafoe, Madison Keys, Emma Navarro, Lorenzo Musetti, and Holger Rune.

Taylor Fritz leads the men’s singles field as world No. 4, while Jessica Pegula tops the women’s bracket at No. 3, alongside other high-profile names such as Emma Navarro (No. 9), Madison Keys (No. 7), and defending women’s champion Paula Badosa—though Badosa has since withdrawn due to injury.

Venus Williams’ comeback has drawn major attention. At age 45, she received a wild card into doubles alongside local player Hailey Baptiste and convincingly defeated Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue 6–3, 6–1 in first-round doubles play. Her return to singles is set against Peyton Stearns, and marks her first tour match since the 2024 Miami Open. ESPN and The Washington Post note that Williams has hinted at a possible continuation of her competitive journey depending on her physical readiness.

Broadcast and streaming coverage in the U.S. includes Tennis Channel and Tennis Channel 2, with additional streaming via Sling Orange, DirecTV Sports Pack, Fubo Pro, and the Tennis Channel App for $10/month. International viewers can tune in through region-specific platforms like Sky Sports (UK), beIN Sports (Australia), and TSN (Canada).

This year marks the 56th edition of the men’s tournament and the 13th for the women, maintaining its status as the only joint ATP–WTA 500-level event on tour. It offers a prestigious 48-player men’s draw, a 32-player women’s draw, and draws fans with events peaking at around 81,000 spectators. Prize money totals approximately $2.4 million (ATP) and $1.28 million (WTA).

Beyond the matches, the tournament embraces local culture and hospitality. Over 70,000 attendees are expected to enjoy gourmet offerings from notable chefs and shops—ranging from The Inn at Little Washington’s truffle popcorn to Ben’s Chili Bowl and culinary contributions from José Andrés—paired with beverage lounges and family-friendly amenities.

As a key lead-in to the U.S. Open in late August, the Washington Open serves as a pivotal stop in the North American hard-court swing. Tournament chair Mark Ein has noted continued sellouts over the past four years and plans to further amplify the event’s draw both on and off the court.

For fans looking to catch all the action, matches will be televised on Tennis Channel and Tennis Channel 2, with supplementary online streams available via the Tennis Channel App and various pay-TV providers. International formatting ensures global coverage for audiences tuning in from the UK, Australia, Canada, and beyond.
