EDMONTON, Alberta — The Edmonton Oilers opened the 2025 Stanley Cup Final with a dramatic 4–3 overtime victory over the defending champion Florida Panthers on June 4 at Rogers Place. Leon Draisaitl scored the game-winning goal on a power play with just 31 seconds remaining in the extra period, giving Edmonton a 1–0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Draisaitl, who also netted the game’s opening goal just 66 seconds into the first period, tied the NHL record for most overtime goals in a single postseason with his third of the playoffs. His clutch performance was complemented by captain Connor McDavid, who assisted on both the tying and winning goals, showcasing his leadership and playmaking prowess.
The Panthers appeared to be in control early, with Sam Bennett scoring twice and Brad Marchand adding a power-play goal to build a 3–1 lead by the second period. However, the Oilers mounted a comeback, with Viktor Arvidsson narrowing the gap and Mattias Ekholm, returning from injury, tying the game in the third period.
Goaltender Stuart Skinner made 29 saves for Edmonton, including several critical stops late in regulation and overtime, while Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky faced 35 shots, making 31 saves. Despite the loss, Panthers coach Paul Maurice emphasized the team’s resilience and focus heading into Game 2.
The victory marks a significant shift for the Oilers, who lost the first three games of the 2024 Final against Florida before forcing a Game 7. With home-ice advantage this year, Edmonton aims to capitalize on their momentum as the series continues.
Game 2 is scheduled for Friday night in Edmonton, before the series shifts to Florida for Games 3 and 4.
